The original essay
(Old article written 3-4 years back, just posting for sake of posting, many of these information may not be relevant now or already being handled.)
The technology is evolving, and it will come to stage when all the major bits and pieces will solve; ensuring and effectively removing last bit of technical challenges for Car driving
But where are we with ADVs now and things to do before we see this as real
Vehicles, I chose the word specifically as we may see a complete evolvement of technology to go across cars/heavy vehicles/potentially next stage of flying cars also may be we are looking at other subtle areas like Motor Bikes/scooters/electric scooters and bikes/boats/ships and potentially planes.
- Trust
- Bias
- Privacy
- Collaboration
-
Legal
- Changes in Driving Rules
- Legal Implications
- Other Legal issues
- Demography
- Infrastructure
- Habits
- Human and Non-System errors
- System Errors
Trust:
The trust is about stressing that technology will be able to do the thing fine… and responsibly. Expecting machine to be:
- Better and Safer drivers
- In all the scenario (normal and extreme)
- Can take the right decision (We will cover this in the Bias section)
- Can be proven that it is safer (potentially statistically)
- Non-Trusting user provision
Bias
- Human are bias-ed and this will come extensively to the technology judgement/selection
- Bias here I am talking is – The human bias towards its own capability
- Also the above chains into another thing, which is Temporal Shift, where one belief changes over time
- Human are good in making their decisions right by changing their belief, but will they be willing to be do with machine managing their commute
-
A simple decision
- Between a brake and swerve the line change can be controversial (assuming both non-fatal)
- But decisions are Personal Injury vs. Injuring A vs. Injuring B will have deeper emotional conflict
- There is no rule which can perfect it and some of these things are based on localized belief
-
So can it be localized and asked to do certain thing under certain circumstance in certain areas
- Answer is yes and no
- But it will be like telling a smarter child to accept their parents misguided beliefs (or say earth is still flat)
Privacy
- We talk a hell lot above privacy, and it is becoming an issue where personal/state boundaries lies
- Some technologies need to share our voice to work
- Others fingerprints/retina
-
So slowly and slowly each of this information is shared
- I bet a computer will know more about my life and then I myself
- With evolving technology and need to interact with various bits and pieces will make privacy as secondary
Legal
- In case of accident who is responsible (Human vs. Car)
- In case of 2 cars colliding who ( Who got the better software/hardware may be?)
- Will active car insurance will be needed or will it become part
- System issues – how they will be divided as core system issues/maintenance vs. negligence issue
-
Change in the laws to segregate traffic may
- Taking “Jay walking” rule in US as an example
-
Can a decision taken by machine resulting in fatality, may trigger a law suit of “man slaughter” to the code writer or the company
- A small twist if the code writer is machine
- Current road rules
